[fine. - evaporate]
behind the scenes
Almost no preparation went into this video…
And somehow it turned out to be one of my favourites. I had borrowed my bosses camera for the week while he was away. This led to me texting my buddy Cameron on a Thursday afternoon asking if he wanted to shoot a music video.
Cam had just released a 5 song EP titled ‘evaporate’ under the name ‘Fine.’ We always wanted to do a visual project together so the timing was ripe. I left work early and drove around the corner to his basement apartment where we spent the next 8 hours.
I think one of the reasons why this video was pleasing to finish was because of its simplicity. His apartment was already decorated thanks to his fiancé Trisha’s great taste, and everything we needed was right there.
For me, the key story elements were the cramped quarters, the single bulb from his album cover, a window, the bathroom mirror, and the camera. Coupled with a constant, uneasy movement, our ambition was to display the state of mind of an individually trying to convince themselves that they are ‘fine.’
One of our favourite additions were the singalong subtitles in the final verse. A subtle device, they helped us perpetuate the convincing nature of the video. At the end we cut back to all of the scenes where everything has seemingly gone to shit (the cluttered living room, overflowing sink) and brought a conclusion to our small, basement apartment world.
