[The Bae Beach Club] All Day
behind the scenes

I had almost recovered from the lastli shoot when…

Okay maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but still. After the lastli video I seriously questioned voluntary 20 hour days and taking time off work for videos that hardly saw the light of day. That being said, when Kiki and Chase messaged me about doing a video for their band I was all in.

Chase is a longtime friend of mine, we met when he was the drummer of my brothers band Bitter Kids. Chases’ Dad, Drew, has always been a huge supporter of our projects. I’ve filmed in nearly every house he’s owned (they move a lot). When I was told I could have creative freedom in their new place, I was excited.

Although this meant more voluntary all nighters I had a feeling it would be worth it. I called up Matt Wilkshire, told him we had a new project, he asked if we could shoot tomorrow, I said 1 month, and so it began.

The concept started with a painting Kiki made. The idea was about travelling to a fantastical place in your mind to get out of the day to day. We debated a few simple ideas, like getting stock footage and projecting it onto them, but good stock footage was out of our budget so we did the next best thing: turn Drew’s house into an imaginative paradise.

From there, I meticulously planned the video out shot for shot. For the most part, the edit was on paper. I think there were 3 scenes that we had to scrap while shooting (time constraints) and merge into one, but aside from that we got what we wanted.

Art directing on this was fun. We borrowed a bunch of plants from Sunshine Gardens in St. Catharines (Kiki’s former summer job), bought a lot of sand, raided my Nana’s prop shop and took over Drew’s house for 2 days. It was a cozy setup, despite some general setbacks. With the help of a small dedicated crew, and the ability to thrive off of no sleep, we came through with a new experience for all of us.

That’s my cousin on the left. Always great to work your family to the bone.

Poor Chase had to work the next day. You can tell how tired he is by the fact that he’s sleeping upright.
